This is the first thing I ever made from steel (apart from welding patches onto rotten cars). It was made in friends' garages and back yards using bits of old storage heaters from a burned-out mill in Nottingham. Some years after I made it I wondered what I was thinking about - nothing conscious at the time; and I realised that this work is a self-portrait.
